On the 12 July Norman Jeffery, County Organiser, presented John and Susan Beck of 25 Bowling Green Road, Cirencester with a gift from the ngs to mark the 30 years of opening their garden for the scheme. In thanking them Norman commented that John and Susan had shown remarkable enthusiasm for both the scheme and their garden through opening on several days each year. Over the years they have been successful in raising more that £22,000 for the ngs.
Their garden is a small but packed mass of colour and includes clematis, roses and many perennials. However its real feature is the more that 400 varieties of Hemerocallis, (daylilies) which are a real delight for its many visitors.
We would love to have some open days for the wonderful allotments that we know abound in Gloucestershire. It’s an opportunity to show off the range and quality of your vegetables as well as the flowers that are always grown in allotments. It would also be a wonderful way to introduce new converts to home grown food, as well as dispense advice to those afflicted with thrips, greenfly, club root and all the other forces of nature that are arrayed against us.
You could also run some fun competitions for the children and sell any excess produce – all in aid of NGS and your own charities. Follow this link to see all the charities that NGS supports: NGS charities
So any allotment associations who would like to help and contribute to very worthwhile charities, please get in touch with me and let’s discuss what we can do together.

Many visitors have been privileged to enjoy some of England’s finest gardens in Gloucestershire. In order to stimulate further interest a county garden website has been developed. Now garden enthusiasts can visit www.gloucestershiregardens.org to find details of the National Gardens Scheme Gardens “Open for Charity” in Gloucestershire. It has some 100 garden owners who generously open their gardens, helping to raise over £100,000 last year for the worthwhile charities which the NGS supports.
County Organiser Norman Jeffery said "I am very excited about the new Gloucestershire NGS website which will be of enormous benefit to all our garden visitors. It is easy to use, provides full details of all the gardens, dates and location maps, coupled with the ability to download the complete county Garden Guide."
Currently a 64 page, full colour Garden Guide with pictures of the garden delights awaiting visitors is available from garden centres, public libraries and tourist information centres.
Visiting an NGS garden provides great pleasure, whether by simply enjoying the visual delights or gaining ideas for your own garden. You will also receive a warm welcome and in most cases the famous NGS homemade teas, and in doing so you will know that you are making an important contribution to some wonderful causes.
Now moving with the times the NGS in Gloucestershire is encouraging its garden enthusiasts to visit, promote and link to: www.gloucestershiregardens.org to enjoy one or many of Gloucestershire's open garden days.
